A Gucci piece, properly cared for, lasts a lifetime. These are the practices recommended by Gucci’s own artisans — and by our specialists who work with these items every day.
Care by Material
Smooth Leather
—Wipe after each use with a dry, soft cloth
—Never use cleaning sprays or conditioners
—If wet, blot immediately — do not rub
—Keep away from direct sunlight and heat
—Avoid contact with perfume or oils
GG Canvas
—Clean with a slightly damp soft cloth
—Dry immediately — never let moisture sit
—Do not use solvents or alcohol wipes
—Store flat to preserve canvas shape
—Avoid prolonged exposure to UV light
Suede & Velvet
—Brush gently with a soft suede brush
—Use a suede eraser for dry marks
—Never use water or wet cloths
—Apply suede protector spray seasonally
—For stains, consult a specialist
Hardware
—Polish with a dry microfibre cloth
—Never use metal polish or abrasives
—Keep dry — moisture causes tarnishing
—Avoid contact with perfume or hairspray
—Zip closures lightly with a wax pencil
Between Uses
How to store your piece
Use the Dust Bag
Always store in the original flannel dust bag. It protects against dust, light, and surface scratches.
Stuff to Keep Shape
Fill loosely with acid-free tissue paper. Never use newspaper — the ink transfers to the lining.
Avoid Stacking
Never place items on top of each other. Weight distorts hardware, creases leather, and crushes handles.
Control the Environment
Store in a cool, dry, dark space. Humidity causes mould; heat dries and cracks the leather finish.
Common Repairs
Zipper replacementA worn or broken zipper can be replaced by a specialist using brand-matched hardware. Never force a stiff zipper — apply a wax pencil to the teeth and ease gently.
Handle conditioningVachetta leather handles naturally darken with use and hand oils. This patina is normal and desirable. Cracking or splitting handles should be addressed by a leather repair specialist.
Lining repairInterior lining tears and pilling are common over time. A skilled artisan can replace the lining while preserving the original exterior and all hardware.
Colour restorationFading and scuffs on leather can be restored with professional re-dyeing. This should only be done by a specialist — at-home dyes permanently alter the leather and reduce resale value.
Strap & chain repairFraying leather straps or bent chain links can often be repaired rather than replaced. Bring the item to a specialist before the damage progresses — early intervention is always less costly.
Bamboo handle careStore with the provided plastic bands to prevent warping. Bamboo is sensitive to humidity — avoid storing near windows. Cracks in bamboo require specialist repair.
A note from our specialists
“The pieces we see age best are the ones stored consistently — not used less.”
Frequency of use rarely causes damage. Incorrect storage, improper cleaning, and moisture exposure are the primary causes of deterioration in pre-owned Gucci items.
